Multi-modal shipping, also known as combined transport, is the double threat of shipping—featuring at least two modes of transportation. This term refers to a single contractual agreement between a carrier and shipping company that involves more than one mode of transport to move freight, including rail, road, air, or ocean.Paired with an effective multimodal transportation management system, shippers can streamline all aspects of the shipping process, from order management and load optimization to rating and routing, freight auditing and payment, and business intelligence.According to Research and Markets, “multimodal transport can improve transportation efficiency by 30%, reduce transportation costs by 20%, and promote energy savings and emissions reduction by more than one third.”With all shipping processes centralized under one system, not to mention a trustworthy logistics partner’s wrap-around support and expertise, shippers can increase efficiency, leverage real-time data to improve strategy, and boost their bottom line. Here’s how multimodal TMS solutions change the logistics game.Load PlanningOne of the most important parts of the shipping process begins in the preparation and planning stage. A multi-modal TMS solution enables shippers to manage their orders better—first by making sure all of their systems are in sync. This means integrating ERP, WMS, or other execution platforms directly with the TMS to get a complete view of the order lifecycle.Integration not only provides shippers with greater visibility into the order lifecycle but also helps save time and reduce the potential for human error. Rather than enter information by hand, automation allows for faster processing so shippers can work more efficiently and minimize errors. From there, the TMS allows users to consolidate shipments by taking capacity, route optimization, and other factors into account. By leveraging powerful algorithms to maximize the capacity of each truck and driver, shippers can optimize their loads in advance.Rating and Routing CenterWhen it’s time for shippers to focus on the execution process, a multimodal TMS solution centralizes and enhances rating, carrier selection, tendering, and execution. This process is even more straightforward with support from a reliable logistics partner.CTSI-Global assists in the following, among other processes:Choosing an optimal carrierManaging electronic freight tendersAutomating spot quotesAutomating the carrier dispatch processWith CTSI-Global, shippers gain direct access to carrier APIs, including volume-based quotes, auto-calculated accessorials, and real-time transit estimates. Shippers to have a transportation management system (TMS) that streamlines complicated shipment planning—like finding low-cost, reliable carriers that are able to serve remote locales. They also need to account for challenges that might slow deliveries down to ensure they’re setting the right expectations for clients—not over-promising and under-delivering.Rules and regulations can be complex, so getting ahead of the game is a wise moveEntering any market requires a business to familiarize itself with relevant tax laws, sanctions, embargoes, and other regulatory concerns. These risks can be especially challenging and complex to navigate in emerging markets where the rules aren’t always clear. As such, it’s a good idea for technology supply chain managers to prioritize compliance very early on in the strategy process, rather than scrambling to catch up later and leaving the business vulnerable to fines, reputational damage, and other risks. Partnering with an outsourced provider with deep expertise in the area is often the easiest and most cost-effective way to minimize risk and ensure a smooth entry into the market.Leading solutions for technology supply chainsAt CTSI-Global, we’ve helped many technology companies embrace all the opportunities that new markets can offer. From hunting down carriers to dealing with damaged freight claims, handling your logistics in-house can be a real headache—whether you’re a 10-person operation or a multinational corporation. Trucks and drivers are in short supply and transportation costs are on the rise, driving the price tag up, while efficiency plummets. As for scaling effectively? You can forget about that, at least while your supply chain is holding you back. With shipping as a significant role in your company’s ongoing success, optimizing your supply chain is critical. Making the switch to outsourced logistics is an invaluable step for many companies, helping them maximize their transportation spend and gain greater visibility, without relinquishing control. And since these services can be fully customizable, it’s possible to outsource the functions you don’t want to handle, while holding on to the ones you do.Customization is kingThere’s a common misconception that outsourcing logistics is an all-or-nothing deal—that you hand over the keys to the warehouse, so to speak, only to find yourself locked out. But that’s not the case. Many outsourced logistics providers and third party logistics (3PL) companies offer the same level of customization that you’d expect from any other service your business leverages. You wouldn’t expect your cleaning service to add carpet cleaning if your office floors are all linoleum; likewise, you shouldn’t need to pay for the logistics functions you don’t want. Opt for a company that lets you bundle services that match your requirements—and only pay for what you need.Putting a price on convenienceAnother misconception about outsourced logistics is the idea that they’ll drive up costs. Of course, services of value require a fee. But the operational efficiencies, strategic business insights, and established carrier relationships that can come with outsourcing your logistics will ultimately bring costs down.Say you outsource the handling of your freight claims management. When you’re busy, it’s all too easy to let claims sit, out of sight and mind, until the window to file has passed. Even if you do try to file them in time, you still have to worry about gathering the right documentation, photographing damages, and getting the fax machine working—forcing you to waste valuable time that could be better spent on business development. An outsourced logistics provider can take care of all the busy work for you, ensuring your costs are recouped so your bottom line doesn’t suffer.Outsourcing may also be the solution to your carrier capacity issues. The events of the past 16 months have done significant damage to supply chains around the world. And while there’s a lot to be said about the importance of building resilience to prevent future disruptions from having as catastrophic an impact, the top priority for most shippers right now is simply recovering and rebuilding.Unfortunately, we’re far from out of the woods just yet—and though some initial challenges may have eased up, there are plenty more on the road ahead. Here are three key issues that shippers will have to overcome as they rebuild their supply chains.Challenge #1: Too few qualified peopleGetting operations up and running again, let alone optimized, requires the right people. But since many shippers had to downsize during the pandemic, they now find themselves short on staff at a time when they need them the most.Finding qualified talent has always been difficult and costly, but it may be even more challenging right now with so many companies competing for the same limited talent pool. In 2016, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that it takes companies an average of 42 days and more than $4,100 to fill an open position. Those numbers may be even higher now, given the current talent shortage. Add to that the time and resources that go into training a new team member, multiplied by the number of roles that need to be filled, and the final tally can be eye-watering.Partnered logistics management services can help companies solve this problem. At CTSI-Global, our expert team can handle day-to-day tasks, freeing up in-house teams for bigger-picture work. That way, companies can rapidly scale up their operations—without having to find, hire, and train entire teams first.Challenge #2: Not enough timeFinding people is challenging but not impossible. One thing that is impossible to find more of? Time.Countless companies are trying to make up for lost time, but the sector facing the biggest challenge here is retail. With Black Friday and the wider holiday shopping season looming—a period that often accounts for as much as 60% of a business’s annual sales—companies need to ramp up operations quickly if they want to make up for revenue lost during the pandemic. This is another area where outsourcing can be hugely beneficial. Our team has vast experience plugging into retail supply chains and hitting the ground running. So while you can’t find more time in the day, you can make the most of the time you have with the experts on your side.Challenge #3: Outdated processes and toolsBefore the pandemic, companies might have been able to get by with clunky processes and outdated tools. Sure, they weren’t the most efficient, but they got the job done. Now, however, as they struggle to rebuild their supply chains, those same processes and tools may be what drag them down.It has never been more important to have tools and processes in place that boost efficiency, provide visibility, and enable smarter, more informed decision-making. An Excel spreadsheet is not enough. With a robust
